Why Create Business Cards?
Business cards or "drop" cards are an inexpensive way to market your business offline and bring those customers online by including your website.
One of the most effective
marketing ideas
is to create business cards to distribute to people that you come in contact with or leave them in places that they are likely to be found by potential customers. In fact, I make a conscious effort to give away (or drop) at least five business cards per day. This mindset encourages me to tell people about my business which has proven to be a very effective low-cost promotional activity when compared with other
marketing strategies
that I have used.
Distributing business cards is among the techniques that are known as
gorilla marketing
tactics (Guerilla Marketing). These marketing strategies are used to get the word out about your business through the use of time, energy and imagination rather than a huge marketing budget.
The idea of gorilla marketing came from Jay Levinson’s best selling book
Guerilla Marketing. In his book he emphasizes the importance of concentrating on getting referrals, developing repeat business with the customers that you already have, and increasing the amount of transactions when the opportunity presents itself. These actions are far more effective than spending money on an outreach marketing campaign to get new customers.
This concept is similar to the
relationship marketing
concept which focuses on building long-term relationships with your customers through satisfaction and retention. Both of these concepts foster referral activities from customers who know you and are not hesitant to recommend your business to others.
When you take your offer away from someone, it is easier to give a card away. Say something like, "You know how a lot of people are struggling to make ends meet and looking to make extra money? ...I know this probably wouldn’t apply to you, but if you know anyone who wants to make some extra money, could you give them my card?"
When you create business cards and distribute them, they become a reminder to people who need your product or service or if they know someone who does. You can take it a bit further in order to actually encourage referrals by printing on the back of the card – "Referred by:" which makes it a referral card.
If you use referral cards, you will get the best results by acknowledging the referral with a thank you note and maybe a gift, a discount or enrollment in a drawing for a prize. When I get a referral card back, I send the referrer a thank you note along with a couple of business cards just to make sure that they have some on hand for future referrals.
Never Underestimate the Power of a Business Card
I have been in business for myself for many years...I always create business cards for each business I am promoting. I have gotten phone calls from business cards I handed out years ago. Consistency is key--keep handing out those business cards!
